Pneumatics CRN exemptions

Fittings & Piping Registration Exemptions for Pneumatics CRN exemption

One of the most inconsistent and confusing areas of pressure regulation across Canada applies to fittings and piping systems for Pneumatics CRN exemption. This is a brief summary of the exemptions across Canada as far as is possible to discern. When in doubt ask a regulator. Sometimes it is easier to simply obtain a Canadian Registration Number. For a discussion of other exemptions and regulations links please see our blog CRN & U.S.A. Pressure Law.

Exemptions:

Ontario: 0.REG.220 paragraph (2) (k) compressed air piping, up to and including 3/4 inch nominal pipe size.

Newfoundland & Labrador: Regulation 119/96 Paragraph 32 (d) compressed gas plants that do not exceed 250 kilowatts; and (e) compressed air plants that are portable.

Alberta: PESR AR 49/2006 paragraph 4(2) Pressure piping (a) that does not exceed DN 50, (b) that has a maximum allowable working pressure not exceeding 1035 kilopascals, (c) that has a design minimum temperature no lower than minus 46 degrees Celsius and a design temperature not exceeding 186 degrees Celsius, (d) that contains air, nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide, steam, hot water or water and glycol, and (e) that is constructed to the applicable ASME Code, is exempt from all the other requirements of this Regulation except section 35.

Manitoba: C.C.S.M. c. S210 The Steam and Pressure Plants Act paragraph does not provide exemption data, and at the time of writing it seems that the Inspection and Technical Services Manitoba has full discretion as to exemptions. The main exemption is that of piping systems per the following two charts: Chart to determine pressure piping installation & Flow Chart for Installation of Piping Systems. Another exemption is that of certain categories of fittings that was recently issued and is per the following Exemption from Registration Requirements.

Saskatchewan: The Technical Safety authority of Saskatchewan has a decent flowchart that was recently published that states exemption of piping system registration if the piping system answers the question “is the system air piping with a diameter of 25.4 mm (1”) roles (REG 3(1)d)”.

Quebec: Regulation respecting pressure vessels Chapter A-20.01, ss. 27 and 28 paragraph 2 illustrates exemptions however we could find no specific exemptions for pneumatic fittings or piping.

Yukon: Boiler and Pressure Vessel Act does not appear to mention specific exemptions for pneumatic fittings or piping.

North West Territories: Boiler & Pressure Vessels Act R.S.N.W.T 1988, c.B-2 does not appear to mention specific exemptions for pneumatic fittings or piping.

Nunavut: Boilers and Pressure Vessels Regulations R-006-93 does not appear to mention specific exemptions for pneumatic fittings or piping.

British Columbia: Safety Standards Act POWER ENGINEERS, BOILER, PRESSURE VESSEL AND REFRIGERATION SAFETY REGULATION paragraph 6 contains exemptions that do not appear to mention specific exemptions for pneumatic fittings or piping. Another exemption is that of certain categories of fittings that was recently issued and is per the following Exemption from Registration Requirements.

Prince Edward Island: Boiler and Pressure Vessels Act R.S.N.W.T 1988, c.B-2 does not appear to mention specific exemptions for pneumatic fittings or piping.

Nova Scotia: Nova Scotia Boiler and Pressure Equipment Regulations made under Section 49 of the Technical Safety Act S.N.S. 2008, c. 10 O.I.C. 2011-27 (January 18, 2011, effective April 1, 2011), N.S. Reg. 10/2011   exemptions for Pneumatics CRN exemption are found here: 4 (1) (j) a pressure piping system with any of the following types of piping or tubing: (iii)   air piping or tubing that has a system safety or relief valve set at a pressure of 1379 kPag (200 psig) or lower”.

New Brunswick: Regulation 84-174 does not appear to mention specific exemptions for pneumatic fittings or piping.
